Who organizes?
There are three variants, each with different implications:
- Company — the most formal. The budget is the company's, the guest list is entirely from the team.
- Colleagues, by contribution — the most common. More personally, it allows for the invitation of former colleagues.
- Family — the warmest, but at the risk of excluding the collective, which is often the most important part of the celebration.
The best formula, when possible: colleagues organize, family is invited. The celebrant appreciates more than anything that his two worlds meet.
Format: lunch or dinner?

Speeches: what works
- Maximum three, each under three minutes. A boss, a close colleague, possibly someone in the family.
- Specific, not general. A specific incident is worth ten adjectives. "He stayed until 11 at night to finish the December 2009 report" says more than "he was a consummate professional.".
- No jokes about age. It is the most common mistake and it almost always goes wrong.
- No references to what he will do "now that he has time"„, unless the celebrant brought up the subject first. Retirement is not universally desired.
- Announce speakers a week in advance. Impromptu speeches get long.
