In short: The alms meal is organized after the funeral and, subsequently, at the 40-day, 6-month, one-year and, in many families, annual funerals. The usual format in the Arad area: 20-80 participants, duration 2-3 hours, traditional menu served simply, without music. Organized at a location, it relieves the grieving family of preparations at a time when they do not have the necessary resources.
When is it organized?
| time | Observations |
|---|---|
| Day of the funeral | Immediately after the service; the most numerous of all |
| At 40 days | Second in importance; smaller group, family and close friends |
| At 6 months | Close family |
| One year later | Family and close friends |
| Annual | Small group, often just the family |
It is usually held at noon, immediately after the church or cemetery service. The usual duration is 2-3 hours.
Traditional menu
In the Arad area and in Banat, the usual structure is:
- Cage — it is served first, after prayer
- Rolls and bread
- Soup or broth — chicken or cow
- Main course — stuffed cabbage rolls, steak with side dishes, rice
- Desert — homemade cakes, sponge cake
- Red wine, in moderate quantity
If the meal falls on a fasting day or during a fasting period, a fasting menu is prepared: vegetable soup, fasting sarmale, beans, fish dishes, dairy-free cakes and eggs. Notify the location in advance, because they completely change the menu.
What needs to be established, practically
- Approximate number of people. At the funeral dinner, attendance is hard to estimate exactly. Give a figure and ask the venue what margin they can work with.
- Hour. It depends on the time of the service; leave a 30-45 minute travel time.
- Fasting menu or sweet, depending on the season.
- Coliva and the colaci — who prepares them: family, a relative, a bakery or the location.
- packages for those who cannot stay — a common practice, which must be announced in advance.
- The arrangement. Communal tables, no festive decor, no music.
Why many families choose a location
It's not a matter of convenience, it's a matter of capacity. In the days following a loss, the family has to manage formalities, relatives coming from out of town, arrangements at the church and cemetery. Preparing a meal for 60 people at the same time is simply beyond the capabilities of most people at that time.
A location takes care of the food, service, space, and cleanliness. The family is left with what matters: being present with those who came.
