In short: A baptism menu is built on four levels — cold appetizer, hot first course, main course, and cake/dessert — sized for a 4-6 hour event. The rule of thumb used by restaurants is: the appetizer is placed on the table before the guests arrive, hot courses are served every 60-90 minutes, and the cake comes after 9:00 PM, when the party is at its peak.
What does the structure of a baptism menu look like?
The difference between a baptism that "went well" and one where everyone went hungry between courses is not about how expensive the menu is, but about serving pace. At baptisms organized at La Cuscrii Guesthouse We work with the following structure, then adapted to each family:
| time | What is served? | Indicative range |
|---|---|---|
| Greeting | Cold appetizer on the plate, water, soft drinks | before arrival, already on the table |
| First course | Soup or broth (2 options, one poultry) | 45-60 minutes after guests are seated |
| Main course | Hot platter with 3-4 meat assortments + side dishes + pickles | 60-90 minutes after the first course |
| Dance break | Fruits, cheeses, homemade cakes | between the main course and the cake |
| cake | Cake + candy bar, if available | usually after 9:00 PM |
| Final | Horseradish soup or hot "morning" snack„ | optional, for long parties |
How many grams of food are calculated per person
The question comes up every time we discuss a proposal. Kitchens in Romania generally work with these quantities per adult at a baptism-type event:
- Cold appetizer: 350-450 g/person (sausages, cheeses, cherry tomatoes, olives, pate, stuffed eggs, bread)
- Soup: 350-400ml
- Main course: 400-500 g, of which 200-250 g meat
- Desert: 150-200 g, plus the slice of cake
For children under 10 years old is calculated as approximately half of the adult portion, but with a separate menu: many children do not eat soup and cold cuts, but instead consume large quantities of french fries, schnitzel, plain pasta and fruit. Explicitly ask for a children's menu — at La Cuscrii we prepare it on request, and the little ones can eat even earlier than the adults, so they don't have to wait for the rhythm of the main meal.
Special menus: vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free
At a baptism of 60-100 guests, there will almost always be 2-5 people with dietary restrictions. Don't leave them to the day of the event. The correct practice is:
- Add a section on the invitation for dietary restrictions, with a response deadline.
- Communicate the exact number of special menus to the location with at least 7 days before.
- You ask for special plates to be marked and carried nominally at the table, not left on the common plate.
Our kitchen adapts the menu for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or lactose-free requirements, if you notify us when booking. Also mention serious allergies (peanuts, seafood) - they are treated differently than a simple preference.
What influences the cost of a baptism menu?
The price per person varies widely in Arad County, depending on four factors that you can control:
- Number of meat varieties from the main course — switching from 4 to 3 assortments reduces the cost without showing it on the table.
- Beverage regime — drink included in the menu, drink for consumption or own drink with service charge. The difference between the options is the largest line in the estimate.
- The cake and the candy bar — ordered separately at the bakery or included by the location.
- Event duration — a party that goes past midnight involves additional staff and, sometimes, a final snack.

9 questions to ask the restaurant before signing
- Is the menu served on a platter or a plate? (The platter is more social, the plate is more portion-controlled.)
- What happens to the leftover food—is it packed for the family?
- Is the drink included, on consumption, or can I bring my own drink? Is there a service charge?
- Can I bring the cake from my bakery? Is there a cutting fee?
- How many waiters are allocated to my number of guests?
- Is a separate menu prepared for children and for the event staff (photographer, band, cameraman)?
- When must the final number of guests be confirmed and how are absentees billed?
- Is there a menu tasting before the event?
- Who is in charge of the event on the day and can I speak to them directly?
The last question is the most important and the most often forgotten. A baptism works well when there is one person responsible from the location, with whom you can communicate from arrival to departure.
Menu for the event team
The photographer, cameraman, band, or DJ will be at the event for 6-8 hours. Their contracts usually include a meal. It's not a big expense, but if you forget it, it can be a hassle on the day of the event. Add 3-5 staff menus to your budget from the start, and tell the venue what time to serve them — usually right after the guests' main course, when their work break is natural.
The connection between the menu and the space
A good menu needs a room that supports it. On covered terrace at La Cuscrii, with a capacity of up to 100 guests, the kitchen is steps away from the tables — meaning that hot dishes arrive hot, not lukewarm. It's a difference you can feel in the soup and the main course, especially at events of over 70 people.
If you have family coming from far away among your guests, keep in mind that we also have 8 accommodation rooms in the same yard, 200 m from the A1 exit and Arad airport. No one drives after the party.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should the baptism menu be decided?
The menu structure is established upon reservation, and the final version, with the exact number of servings and special menus, is delivered 7-10 days before the event. The cake is usually ordered 2-3 weeks in advance.
Can the cake be brought from another bakery?
Yes, at Pensiunea La Cuscrii you can bring the cake from your favorite bakery. Let us know in advance so we can prepare the refrigerator and cake table. We will discuss at the time of booking if any fees apply.
What menu is prepared for children at baptism?
A child's menu generally contains a simple snack, a light main course (schnitzel, pasta, potatoes), fruit and dessert, in portions about half that of an adult. It can be served earlier than the adult menu.
How many guests can fit at a baptism at Pensiunea La Cuscrii?
The covered terrace hosts private events for up to 100 guests, and intimate formats of 20-40 people can be organized in a small arrangement.
Can gluten-free or vegan menus be prepared?
Yes. We adapt the menu for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or lactose-free requirements, if you communicate the exact number of special portions to us when booking or at least one week in advance.
Do you want a menu estimate for your baptism?
Tell us the number of guests and the date, and we will send you the proposed menu, by course, with price per person.
